Demosthenes (Demos) Papamatheakis, MD – Bio-sketch


Dr. Papamatheakis is an Associate Clinical Professor for the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Division at UC San Diego (UCSD). He grew up in Greece, where he completed his medical school training, and then moved to Canada where he did clinical research. After completing his residency in internal medicine in Michigan, he did a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Loma Linda University in California. He has been a member of the Pulmonary Vascular Group since joining UCSD in 2011, focusing on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) and Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH). His clinical interests, in addition to pulmonary vascular disease, include critical care medicine and staffing the pulmonary fellow’s continuity clinic. His research interests focus on pulmonary vascular medicine and he is an investigator on multiple clinical trials for PAH and CTEPH. He has previously published in the fields of glaucoma, pulmonary vascular contractility and long-term hypoxia and has also authored multiple reviews and chapters in the field of pulmonary vascular medicine. His career also focuses on medical education. He is the director of the 2nd year medical student Pulmonary course at UCSD School of Medicine, and is a frequent lecturer on pulmonary vascular disease for a very wide audience ranging from medical students to fellows, as well as non-physician health care professionals.
