Maynard Rasmussen, MD

For over 20 years, I have been a board-certified Neonatologist, attending primarily at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns and practicing at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista, Scripps Chula Vista, Scripps San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital. I am currently Chairman of the Pediatric Department Supervisory Committee at Sharp Mary Birch, and I am a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Sharp Mary Birch. Since 2001, I continue to serve on the committee of Sharp Healthcare IRB.

My ongoing research includes

  • Inhaled Nitric Oxide (iNO) Therapy
  • pulse oximetry
  • Intravenous Levetriacetam in Neonatal Seizures
  • Therapeutic Hypothermia for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

In December of 2012, my work with cooling to prevent neurological damage was featured on San Diego’s channel 7 news. My most recent publication is an article in the Journal of Perinatology, May 2012, titled “Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation after surfactant treatment for respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants <30 weeks’ gestation: a randomized, controlled trial.”

I have been a CAN member since 1992 and served on the Executive Committee from 2002 to 2006. I am honored to be nominated for the position of Southeast Trustee, as my goal is to "give a voice" to California's community based neonatologists, in addition to representing the neonatologists in my region.
