Date & Location
Monday, July 20, 2020, 5:21 PM - Wednesday, July 19, 2023, 6:21 PM

Overview
African Americans suffer the greatest health inequities / disparities of all ethnic groups in US and these disparities cannot be explained by the usual social determinants of health (SDOH) such as SES, geography, education, health access, health quality, genetics or life styles. Although critical contributors to one’s health status and health disparities these factors do not completely explain the level of disparities for African Americans. This presentation will highlight data that shows how a life time of ethnohistoric and social inequities related to slavery and post-slavery policies and culture cause chronic toxic stress and serves as a significant contributor to racial and ethnic health disparities for African Americans.

Target Audience
Specialties - All Specialties
Professions - Behavioral Therapist, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician, Physician, Physician Associate, Psychologist, Social Worker

Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the origins and history of racism in US health system
  2. Differentiate between equality and equity
  3. Discuss how the combination of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) and chronic stress referred to as allostatic load are root causes of health inequities leading to chronic diseases
  4. Describe chronic toxic stress and its relationship to racial and ethnic health disparities especially with African Americans
  5. Discuss a case study of a patient with Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder (PTSD)
