SHC SEA Health Equity Series - The Power of Culture and Community: The Latine Community and Diabetes Care - 11/20/2024

Designated SEA members will plan and execute education covering a wide range of cultural competence criteria that are part of the San Diego community in support of Sharp's vision to be the best place to work, the best place to practice medicine and the best place to receive care.

1. Identify the top three diabetes risk factors in the US and Latine community.
2. Discuss how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence health behaviors such as food choices and risk factors such as gestational diabetes in the Latine community.
3. Summarize how culture and community can empower patients to improve their health
4. Outline strategies with patients that support positive health choices without abandoning culturally preferred flavors, eating patterns and activity patterns

Cultural & Linguistic Competency and Implicit Bias Standards: This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include curriculum addressing the topic of cultural and linguistic competency, in conjunction with California Senate Bill 923 gender-affirming care, and in compliance with California Assembly Bill 241 which requires that all CME activities incorporate educational components to address factors identified as impacting the provider’s patient populations and disparities potentially caused and exacerbated.
