Vicarious Trauma (VT), coined by Laurie A Pearlman and Karen W Saakvitne in 1995, describes a significant shift in a helping professional’s world view when they work with individuals who have experienced trauma. The purpose of this e-module is to help healthcare professionals identify, address, and or prevent vicarious trauma.

Medical systems tend to focus only on the extreme cases of physician burnout, so it automatically implies that there is something wrong with the person suffering from it. We tend to miss the big picture: This person is working at a certain place with certain people and under certain conditions and requirements. Put simply burnout is a stress reaction to the environment around us! So it is both a system and an individual issue. 

This module is created in part to satisfy the requirements of Senate Bill 464 which requires health care organizations to implement an evidence-based implicit bias curriculum to all inpatient health care providers in perinatal care.
