SGH SEP-1 Early Management of Sepsis in the Inpatient Setting - 2023 Online

Sepsis is life-threating organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated host response to infection.  Its is the #1 cause of death, readmission, and highest healthcare cost in hospitalized patients. The purpose of this e-module is to address the early management of sepsis in the inpatient setting.

1. Describe components of severe sepsis and septic shock.
2. Identify elements of the severe sepsis and septic shock three- and six-hour early management bundles.
3. Define time zero and associated CMS documentation requirements.
4. Differentiate 30ml/kg fluid resuscitation options including standard weight, ideal body weight, fluid sensitive modalities, and exclusion criteria.
5. Identify which patient populations are excluded from the SEP-1 measure.
6. Utilize identified methods and practices to improve SEP-1 compliance.

Cultural & Linguistic Competency: This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include curriculum addressing the topic of cultural and linguistic competency.  The intent of this bill is to ensure that health care professionals are able to meet the cultural and linguistic concerns of a diverse patient population through effective and appropriate professional development.  Cultural and linguistic competency was incorporated into the planning of this activity.
